According to a recent written testimony by Dr. Jared Horvath, PhD, Med, a neuroscientist and educator who spoke before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, one half of children in the USA now use a computer at school for one to four hours each day, and 25% spend more than four hours each day. Unfortunately, studies suggest that less than half of this time is spent actually learning. According to Dr. Horvath, over the past two decades, the cognitive development of children across much of the developed world has stalled and, in many domains, reversed. The available evidence shows that increased classroom screen exposure is generally associated with weaker learning outcomes, not stronger ones.
We have believed for a long time that doing schoolwork primarily on a digital device, looking at a screen and typing out answers was not the best way to retain or allow the brain to learn correctly. Independent research consistently shows that reading comprehension and retention are stronger on paper than on a screen. Similarly, handwritten notetaking reliably outperforms laptop note-taking for long-term learning. Typing encourages verbatim transcription and shallow processing. While on the other hand, handwriting forces summarization, organization, and conceptual encoding, according to Dr. Horvath. The brain learns and retains much better when it is written by hand.
Dr. Horvath has written a book, “The Digital Delusion, how classroom technology harms our kid’s learning.” In the book, he goes into more detail about what we have already discussed and with all the data to back it up. So, what do we learn from all of this information? That the curriculum we use in our school where our students have to read, write, and memorize is still one of the best ways to learn and retain. This is why we use the ACE Curriculum. The self-instructional workbooks work. We have seen it with our own children and the children of hundreds of families that we have helped over the past 35 years.

Our Purpose is to provide parents with the structured organization and accountability of a school while they enjoy the benefits of teaching their children at home. We desire, as a ministry, to be used to build strong Godly families by giving parents this ability to teach their children. Children are a gift from God to parents, and parents are responsible to God for the education of their children. We have helped many parents with this responsibility of giving their children a superior education.
